Do you want to know how to stop thinking about food all the time? Does it feel like no matter what you’re doing during the day, you are constantly thinking about food? Daydreaming about what your next meal will be. Thinking about what you just ate. Wondering how you should be adjusting the rest of your day based on what you just ate. Feeling guilty. Comparing your plate to others… you get the point.
In a world that’s obsessed with diets and weight loss, it’s easy to think your mind is constantly on food because you lack willpower or “need more self-control,” but what if this wasn’t the case?
What if you could silence this constant chatter without relying on willpower? This is exactly what we chat about in this podcast episode. If you are struggling with constant food thoughts and just wish you could find the “off” switch, I encourage you to tune in! Use the player or buttons above, and read on for an overview of this episode.
There could be many reasons that food is constantly on your mind. The most common include dieting, not eating enough, having food rules, feeling guilty about food choices, and more.
A lot of these issues stem from having an unhealthy relationship with food. Maybe you’re stuck in the diet-binge cycle and don’t know how to get out, you find yourself reaching for food whenever any kind of uncomfortable emotion comes up, or maybe you don’t even know why you’re struggling with food, but you just know it doesn’t feel right as it stands right now.
Follow your own intuition toward what feels like your biggest struggle right now (you can also use my free quiz to help). Choose one thing to focus on and run with it, remember there’s no right or wrong here. If you’re feeling scared or overwhelmed doing this type of work, I would recommend working with a professional like myself to help guide you through it so it feels less stressful and frustrating, and more like you’re moving forward and making progress!
Now, let’s dive into my top 4 practical steps you can take to stop constantly thinking about food.
If you aren’t eating enough food or are eating inconsistently throughout the day, your body likely isn’t getting the energy or nutrients it needs. It NEEDS enough food to allow you to function your best throughout the day.
Our body’s primary fuel source is glucose. Which comes from the carbohydrates and other foods that we eat. What happens when you aren’t getting enough fuel for the body, brain and organs to function properly? Your body tries its freaking best to try to get you to EAT MORE.
Thinking about food all the time could just be your body trying to alert you to the fact that it needs more nourishment! Essentially, food thoughts can often be a sign of physical hunger.
Learning to tap into your inner wisdom of hunger and fullness can feel overwhelming at first, but is a crucial step towards silencing those food thoughts.
Your inner wisdom is the best compass and roadmap you have to guide you to food peace. We just have to learn how to hear it and practice to become realigned and connected to it. Know that your hunger and fullness may change day to day, and it can take some time to understand hunger and fullness cues (especially as you learn to eat without things like scales and calorie trackers) so be patient with yourself as you learn to honour your body’s needs.
Once you start to give your body what it needs and understand it’s inner cues you can start to see what food rules you might have. Releasing your inner “food police” voice and silencing the inner criticisms surrounding food and eating is an important step.
For example, let’s say you love cookies but every time you have them you end up feeling really guilty or bingeing on them. This has a lot to do with our inner food police and can contribute to constantly thinking about food.
So what can we do? Tune in to this episode above to learn practical action steps you can take to silence your inner food police. And if you’re ready for individualized, higher-level support as you do this, consider joining Embodied Food Freedom!
Finally, as you learn how to stop thinking about food all the time, start to notice your patterns with food. This looks like taking time to reflect and evaluate your current habits and routines around food.
Maybe your pattern is that you rush to start work in the morning and don’t bother grabbing breakfast, and whenever you do that the afternoon slump + sugar cravings come in HOT AND HEAVY.
Maybe your pattern is that whenever you get more work put on your plate in your job you feel really stressed out and turn towards snacking whenever you get the chance.
Make note of YOUR patterns and behaviors surrounding food. I encourage you to take the next week to see what you notice with an open mind. Always with curiosity, not judgment. That’ll provide you some clarity as to what the heck is going on so you can stop thinking about food so much in the long run!
For more on each of these steps, I encourage you to tune in to the podcast. Including some practical action steps you can take to start applying each of these steps to your life!
In this episode, you’ll learn how to quiet the constant mental chatter surrounding food and silence the inner food police voice that keeps you stuck. If you’ve been looking for your next step towards food freedom, this is it. You deserve to experience the freedom that comes from no longer thinking about food all the time.
